Alright, so spring is upon us! Well (maybe not quite yet in our part of Wisconsin–it only snowed this past weekend!) But spring cleaning time has come and as much as I love regular cleaning (anyone else love vacuuming?), I in no way look forward to spring cleaning! Unfortunately, there are necessary tasks for keeping a house in tip top shape, and doing them isn’t quite as much of a chore with the tools I use. Yep, after being married for five years and living on my own for 10 years, I have perfected Spring Cleaning Hacks! And lucky you, I am going to share them all with you today! PLUS I have a free downloadable printable for you so you can check off item as you accomplish it! And lastly, if you haven’t already joined my secret club for Clean Healthy Home Insiders you should because I publish exclusive specials to the insiders there! There may or may not be a special discount going on right now…I can’t legally advertise publicly any discounts I am offering, so I do it in the private FB group, so join today and save some moolah and time cleaning!
1// Ceiling Fans
Alright, I have a love/ hate relationship with ceiling fans. I hate hate hate how they look and I hate cleaning them. But I do love their utility in the summer. We have such a mild summer here in our part of Wisconsin (we are right by the lake) that we hardly ever have to turn on our AC, so we just turn on the fans instead. Anyhow, fan blades get disgusting and hopping on top of a table is no fun. So I use this handy tool. I attach my envirowand to the top of my mop and voila! I can reach even our tall fan blade. And if you are ballsy and want to get on top of a chair, but don’t like literally pushing dust off the fan blades onto everything below, grab this dusting mitt and it traps all the dust! So much better than a regular microfiber rag.
Refrigerators are probably are most used appliance, and yet we hardly ever clean them out. Take the opportunity to take everything out of your refrigerator and pitch everything that is expired. We got a new fridge this past winter (we inherited one from my parents) and it was a great motivator to do a major purge. While it was empty, I was able to wipe down all of the doors, the drawers, and shelves with my enviro cloth so no nasty chemicals got in it! Because you don’t want chemicals smelling up your food! With this cloth, I just have to use water, and it removes up to 99% of bacteria when used properly.
I have a confession to make…I hadn’t cleaned my oven since we moved in…18 months ago! EEKS! And then, I just had the cleaning ladies do an automatic cleaning of the oven which I am not really sure was all that thorough. So I knew it was high time to give our ol’ oven a big clean. But with two littles in the house I was not going to bust out nasty toxic chemicals. PUHLEASE! I work so hard to keep my house free of toxins I am not going to deliberately invite them and bake them into my food! So I use this oven cleaner. You guys, this %^&* works! And it doesn’t stink up your house! I even gave it afterwards for Evan to clean the grill with. Because our grill was in some serious need of cleaning…you know it’s bad when your grill keeps on catching fire from all of the grease! EEKS! Save your sanity and your time and grab this completely non-toxic ninja oven cleaner! Yeah, I consider it my secret ninja cleaner because although it is completely unassuming in a normal bottle (and is non-toxic) it has kick butt moves!
After a long winter, our vents need to be cleaned out. Occasionally when I am vacuuming, I will stop and vacuum the vent but to be completely honest, I don’t usually. I mean if it is staring me in the face with cobwebs, yes, but if not, probably skip it…So spring time is when my vents get a thorough cleaning. I use my handy dusting mitt to grab all of the dust and make sure it doesn’t continue to vent dust through my entire house. I also use this time to switch out our air filters. You are supposed to do this every 3 months; but, I will be honest, we sometimes forget…who else is with me there?
DO you know what is IN your mattress? Well, I won’t go into the details but I will tell you that there are a whole lot of dust mites living in there and feasting on your organic waste. If you consistently wake up congested, then you should look into cleaning your mattress. I personally, vacuum it about every three months when I rotate the bed (I remember this by doing it the whenever we have our oil changed!) But, since I have started using this mattress cleaner, my allergies are a lot better when I wake up! Just spray it on your mattress. I spray it on our dog beds, fabric couches, and stuffed animals too! It is just a biodegradable formula and is completely safe and non-toxic and works quickly to eliminate sources of organic waste and odors!
6// Laundry Machine
You all know how much laundry we do on a daily basis. And I will confess it is my krptonite. I am Mrs. Stuff it in the Washing Machine and Forget About It! Then I end up washing it twice because I forgot, and then I never remember to fold the laundry until I need it. I may have a problem…Anyhow, you need to wash your laundry machine regularly otherwise it is going to make your clothes dirty! No joke, it happened to us years ago and it was nasty! Our clothes would come out dirtier than they went in, and it ended up staining some of Bowe’s onesies with oil stains. Luckily, our laundry machine is super high tech and tells me when it needs to be cleaned, for which I throw in a cup of vinegar and set it to high and heavy duty with an extra rinse. But even with that, I need to do a manual cleaning. Use one of these enviro cloths to wipe down the interior of the laundry machine, including inside the rubber seal. You will find all kinds of nasty stuff in there! Make sure you pull out all the bits of lint and dog hair piled up in there! And a helpful tip if you have a front loader like we do–keep the door open in between washings–it will keep it nice and fresh and prevent mildew from growing!
Your dishwasher can get really nasty too! In addition to cleaning the filter in it, I will routinely clean it by placing a cup of vinegar on the top shelf of the dishwasher and placing it on a hot water cycle. Even so, you still need to give it a manual clean every once in awhile. I use my enviro cloth again here to wipe the interior down. If you have peristent problems with build up, and have hard water (we don’t here in Wisconsin, but we do in Michigan where my parent’s cottage has well water) I would recommend this magnet ball which reduces calcium build up.
So I am a cheap #$% with regards to heating the house. We say we are being green; but, really we are just cheap. We keep our heat at 64 all winter long. To keep us warm when we are asleep, each of the rooms has a big old feather duvet on it (we even have a crib duvet for Jack!) Well, when spring rolls around the duvets need to be washed! I wash ours every year in the spring so I can put it away nice and clean. Look up specifically what you need to wash your duvet. I use a special duvet wash that I got from Scandia Down; however, some other companies recommend different types of laundry detergent, so check with your manufacturer! You don’t want anything too harsh to damage the feathers!
I know many of you live in the south and are already fighting off pollen on your windows. We aren’t quite there up here, but I know when it does happen, I am going to bust out my dust mitt to wipe down the screen windows. It is a whole lot faster and saves water when I can just use my dust mitt! Now, if only I didn’t have a million and one windows to do…
So we have two freezers. We have a deep freeze in the basement, where we keep our quarter cow and what is left of our half of a pig and the freezer on our refrigerator. I know you are supposed to thaw your freezer once a year, but I don’t. What I do do is take an inventory and throw out any expired food. Not only does this free up space, but it will save you money so you don’t make duplicate purchases! Anyone else looking at a good 10 pounds of frozen mango in their freezer because they double bought? Looks like we have a lot of smoothies in their future!
