The moment you sign the last page of your closing documents, it suddenly sinks in….You own a house–and have all the responsibility that goes along with it!
I still remember signing all the paperwork when we bought our house two years ago, and then promptly driving to said new house with a whole bunch of cleaning supplies and a broom! It didn’t seem real at all.
We were over the moon with our new house and all the space it afforded us, but to be honest, when stuff starts to break it suddenly becomes very real! Just in the first week, we discovered a leak with the washing machine (luckily, E’s dad was able to fix it), and we found out the dishwasher was improperly plumbed which would result on it draining on top of the countertop (luckily E was able to E fix it.) Thankfully, they were two manageable problems that were easy to fix. We are thankful we have never had to file a claim; but, know that a day will come when we will have to.
Some stuff is simply out of the scope of the average DIYer. In our neighborhood, we get a lot of wind off the lake (unlike the calm day shown above!). Storms can get ugly really fast, and it regularly blows 25-35 mph. So knowing that there are amazing companies like Esurance that will help us make smart choices with our insurance alleviates a lot of our worries when we think about big problems with our house–like trees falling on it, flooding, and any kind of storm damage.
When you think about your home, you want to think about all the good times–how it’s the home your children will grow up remembering, the place your son took his first steps, where your dogs run and play–not the worries about home ownership.
I spend a lot of time decorating our house, which perplexes some people. A weekend doesn’t go by without some sort of DIY project. Some people ask, “why dedicate all this energy to just making your home look prettier?” To which I reply that I believe it is because our homes are a reflection of us. They are the backdrop to all of our life’s memories. I want my home to work well for my family and to be beautiful. I believe that functional design is beautiful. When things work it makes living a whole lot easier, and when rooms are happy and organized–I can relax!
I know sometimes my design choices surprise people, but well I surprise people! How many people have bird lamps? How many people can truthfully say they used to make 110 lbs of raw dog food/ month as a hobby and own an industrial meat grinder? Not many! But, I believe that adding fun quirky touches that balance out more traditional themes reflect my personality and shows my kids that life doesn’t always have to be so worrisome. And neither does owning a house.
