B, the dogs, and I drove in Friday morning so I could go down to Northwestern for my midwife appointment. I was luckily able to drop off B and the dogs at my in-laws house in Oak Park before heading down into the city solo. Friday night, E drove in after work.
Saturday morning around 11, we caught the El downtown and first explored the Art Institute. One of our favorite things to do before kids was explore museums, and it was one of the reasons I knew E was such a catch. When we had just started dating, E flew out to meet me in NYC (when I was in college in Connecticut.) Not many guys will fly out to meet you in NYC and go to as many art museums as you can squeeze in a weekend for your first weekend away!
While there, we got to see some of the classics and even the Modern Wing.
After checking into the hotel, Hotel Lincoln at 3 o’clock where we had scored a room off of Jetsetter (a sister site to Gilt City) for only $79. We got a park view queen and it was great. It was definitely small but totally clean and nice. Here is a pic off their website (our room was identical).
After dropping off our bag, we hopped the El again (our third ride so far today) down to Frontera. We showed up around 5:30 and put our name in but it was 1.5 hour wait. Luckily, we were able to grab a table by the bar within a half an hour. Then we ordered two appetizers and drinks. By ordering appetizers (one with a sampling of three), we were able to taste a bunch of different dishes and with drinks it was only $60 for the bill including tip. We ordered the Old School Frontera Trio which was amazing, as was the Oaxacan Tamal.
Next, we hopped the El to Andy’s Thai Kitchen, where we ordered MORE food. Yes, it is possible. I cannot believe we accomplished it but maybe our stomachs had been stretched out from so much walking. Right? Totally legitimate reasoning. There we ordered spring rolls (mine), pork neck, grilled squid, and nam tok (grilled beef tenderloin). It is BYOB and is such a steal of a place–three appetizers and an entree only came to $36 with tip. And with that, we headed back to the hotel and attempted to walk off our insanely full bellies (after another trip on the El.)
And with that, I am off to bed because unlike B who after getting home yesterday, slept 16 hours at night and then 3 hours for a nap (Grandma and Grandpa wore her out!) still need to catch some zzzz’s.
