While often overlooked, one of the most important features of a room is the floors. Nothing else can immediately elevate a room like beautiful hardwood floors. There are reasons that hardwood floors are one of the best investments homeowners can make in their home–they immediately make a home look more elegant, more expensive and are an amazing investment! Floors are one of the biggest design components to a room, yet not many people consider them as much as they should.
That’s why I am so excited to partner with Shaw Floors today to show just how much hardwood floors can create elevate the style of any room! I have rounded up 10 rooms in which the hardwood floors make the room and create completely different designs! Plus, three tips on what to think about when you are selecting new floors for your home!
Eventually, we hope to add hardwood floors to the rest of our house (in our living room, family room and the entire upstairs) because it adds unparalleled style! As you can see below–different styles lend different overall vibes to the room and the feelings evoked are completely customizable! Your choice in which hardwood floors to install, depend on what you want in your home.
Little Green Notebook DIYed her beautiful pre-finished oak floors in a herringbone pattern setting the stage for drama in her library.
Whereas above, Decouvrir L’Endoit du Decor shows how a similar color just in a large plank gives a completely different look! It is still very warm with the honeyed tones, but the rougher distressed finish in a larger plank gives it more of an industrial-chic look which goes well with the more Scandinavian modern aesthetic.
Petite Modern Life totally DIYed her kitchen and started by installing new floors. With a similar width of plank as the picture above; but, a different color it evokes a more modern look and sets the stage for her more modern aesthetic. The darker finish also helps camouflage crumbs in a high traffic area like a kitchen!
And in this Catskills home with Scandinavian design featured on Design Sponge, you can see even more of a distressed look that comes off as super chic and modern. The dark tones of the hardwood floors are balanced nicely with the crisp white of the ceilings, walls, and neutral furnishings grounding the space.

And check out these amazing original hardwood floors from a home on Martha’s Vineyard! The wide planks, the colors, and even the direction in which they are installed immediately establishes the mood of the room! But don’t fret if you don’t have original antique hardwoods, you can buy distressed wood that will give you a similar aesthetic from Shaw Floors!

In a completely different color family, these white oak floors set an ethereal mood for the entire room enveloping you. Playing off of the neutral colors of the walls, furnishings, and the floor, the room has a serene atmosphere. And think how different it looks that the rooms shown above with similar furniture and wall colors but different hardwoods!
Showing yet another example of herringbone hardwood floors but in a different color scheme, you can see how a similar layout but different shade of wood evokes a rougher and more rustic look than Little Green Notebook’s shown above. For good reason, this homeowner chooses to eschew rugs in favor of showing off those gorgeous hardwoods–and I would the same!

With a slightly narrower width, less rustic finish, and warmer tones the hardwood floors in this room create a cozy inviting library and coordinate well with the warm tones of the leather bound books on the shelves, the leather ottoman, and the gorgeous antique desk. Similar warm tones are super versatile and are also available from Shaw Floors!
The hardwood floors in our home are slightly lighter but similar width and they too add sophistication to our front hallway. By continuing the hardwood floors throughout our dining room, kitchen, and living room it creates a cohesive and expansive feel to our open concept home! Plus it’s easy for cleaning with little ones who we are still working on potty training!

And finally, no round up would be complete without these amazing antique herringbone hardwood floors! The color is a bit more yellow than our’s and a bit of a wider plank; but, you can see why no one would ever want to cover them up! They are the ultimate in elegant design! You can always DIY your own in similar layout with Shaw Floors’ new hardwood floors!
3 FACTORS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CHOOSING HARDWOOD FLOORS FOR YOUR HOME:
You can see above how even with the same width and type of wood, but different stains, the color can drastically change the overall aesthetic for a room. When selecting hardwood floors for your rooms, consider what general vibe you want to set. Do you warm tones, cooler tones, more industrial-chic than fancy? You can choose from any of them!
Hardwood floor boards can be very wide or narrow depending on what you want. In general, a wider plank will lend itself to more of a relaxed mood that is more unfinished. It is great for entryways, kitchens, mudrooms but even more relaxed living and dining rooms!
3.) FINISH & DISTRESS
Again, you can see the whole gamut of finishes in the images above–everything from polished in a Parisian apartment to semi-distressed in a kitchen. Different levels of finish and distress fit different rooms. When selecting your level of finish, consider the use of the room that you are choosing it for, and the aesthetic desired.
