Summer is my absolute favorite season of the year. The long days, sunshine, and having the pool and the beach within a quick walk from the house make it easier to keep the kids occupied. But, I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I am looking forward to B going back to school and getting some more time to get some work done. Our days are so busy in the summer, that I feel like we are constantly running from one activity to the next.
Like I’ve said before, B goes to a small Montessori preschool and we absolutely love it! But with children in school comes germs, cuts, bruises, and lots of growing pains and school start times! Right now, B is waking up several nights a week from horrible growing pains! And every time we go through a transition, I find that sleeping patterns, health, and growing pains all are in flux for the first several weeks. Last year when B began preschool–we had a lot of sick days. Late this fall, Jack will be beginning to go two mornings a week (for a couple hours) and I know we will be introduced to double the germs! So I am preparing our home so we are ready when the first fevers strike!
Getting back into back-to-school routines requires some planning and preparation for a smooth morning, because I will be honest–I am that person who is constantly late! So setting ourselves up for as smooth as a morning as possible is paramount! To do this, I have made a “Morning Drawer” in our downstairs bathroom that has everything we need to get out the door in the morning: tooth brushes, tooth paste, hair bands, Children’s TYLENOL®, Children’s MOTRIN® and Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream. And don’t worry! This drawer is always locked (like all the other cabinets in our house so the kids can’t get in it! Remember, medications should not be stored within the reach of children.) Please don’t judge the awful wall colors–this room is on our to do list to paint and redo! Making sure we always have the Children’s TYLENOL® and Children’s MOTRIN® ready when the first fever of the year strikes is so key!
My kids tend to get horribly high fevers, which is why we always turn to Children’s MOTRIN®. For high fevers, nothing works faster or lasts longer among OTC brands, and it lasts up to 8 hours.
And for growing pains, we look to Children’s TYLENOL® because it works differently than other pain and fever medicine–it won’t upset little stomachs! Believe me, we don’t need another wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom! It helps reduce fevers, and relieve minor aches and pains. Use only as directed.
And for me, (and children over 12) I always turn to Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream to soothe more sore muscles and joints from lots of running! I pick up all of these at Target!
Having this drawer that has all of the last minute necessities ensures that I don’t ever have to run back upstairs and slow everything down–or when someone has a horrible fever I don’t need to run upstairs!
We also try to prepare the night before, this happens some nights and doesn’t others; but, with the start of the school year, it’s a great time to make the commitment to good habits! I try to set the kids’ clothes out, always place backpacks in the closet when we get home (so they’re there the next morning), and for me, I always have to put my car keys always on the ‘fridge. These simple activities take seriously seconds but save so much time when it counts–no more running around the house spastically looking for someone’s backpack! They help me be on time (now if only they could help my messy bun hair situation from looking so frazzled! Before your kids head back to school, get positively prepared with the right pain relief for you and your family at Target!
