As a busy mom of two maintaining a side business blog, every day can seem like a marathon. From the time the kids get up at 6 AM, to when they go to sleep at 8, it can feel like I never get to catch my breath. But lately, we have been making some changes. With it being so gorgeous outside, my husband and I have been trying to take time to sit down and talk as husband and wife on our back porch (overlooking the pond next to our house) with some music and a glass of wine (for him, not me)–got to pop this baby out in the next couple weeks first! Summer is fleeting in Wisconsin, so we have to make the most of it!
It wasn’t until we went to England earlier this spring, that we realized how little we were actually talking to each other in the course of a day. It often seems like a fire drill when he gets home for dinner–the dog needs to be walked, dinner made, the kids fed, everything cleaned, kids bathed, and then bedtime. And then I go upstairs to work on the blog in bed.
Everyday, it seems like there are always so many things to do (and little voices to hear) that we slowly stopped conversing as a couple. Since this realization, we have been making a concerted effort to stop and enjoy each other’s company. And I have to say it is so nice! It is so important to recognize each other as husband and wife (not mom and dad) every once in awhile! It makes us better parents, better people, and better husband and wife!
We have been married six years as of this past April, and in those six years there have been lots of events: graduate school, new jobs, two kids, two dogs, a new house, another new job, and another baby on the way! So it is understandable, that once we feel like we are getting a grip on things, it all changes. Add in DIYing and running a blog on the side, and you have a full plate–which makes it even more important to stop and savor the time we do have.
But I will confesss that as a Type A personality, I often have trouble relaxing. If there is something that needs to be done (especially something within my sight) I have a lot of trouble. So when we started our new tradition of sitting out on the porch after bedtime with a glass of wine, and some music, I found it easier to relax and enjoy when we sat down outside (no dirty dishes out there!) And once the music was on, I found myself letting go of some of the daily stress. There is something about music playing that soothes even the wildest beasts! I joke about this because I have started playing music more during the day when the kids are up, and I swear, it calms them down too! They love listening and dancing to it!
This summer is the perfect time for you to slow down and listen to the music too! We always love going to outdoor concerts and supporting companies whose values we share. Wente wines is one of those companies–a family-owned company whose love of the journey, translates into their delicious wines. This summer, they are making time to listen to music as well! Good music and wine= the best combination!
I know we are all busy, but just try to stop and listen to the music! I promise, from Type A person to a Type A person, you will find it well worth your time!
